Sometimes the best things in life happen in the spur of the moment. One of my favorite pastimes is to drive around the backroads of Vermont soaking in the beauty of its quaint villages and natural wonders. I remember the day I took this shot because I was looking for great vantage points to shoot Camels Hump mountain when I drove past this old round church. Its beauty froze me in my tracks.
The Old Round Church is actually a sixteen-sided polygon that was. It was built between 1812 and 1814 under the leadership of local blacksmith/carpenter William Rhodes. There are several legends concerning why the church has such an unusual shape. One claims it was to keep the devil out of the corner or to keep the enemy from hiding around the corner on the outside. Another legend holds that Rhodes had 17 workers—one for each side and the last for the belfry.
